I’ve always been fascinated by this ship…and then I learned the back story.
First… let’s find out about the legendary member of the royal family the ship honors..
Here’s everything you need to know about the REAL QUEEN MARY:
Mary of Teck was Queen consort of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions and Empress consort of India as the wife of King George V.
Although technically a princess of Teck, in the Kingdom of Württemberg, she was born and raised in the United Kingdom. Her children included :
George Vl, —> (the current Queen Elizabeth’s Father), Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood, Edward VIII, Prince Henry, Prince Henry, Prince George and Prince John
The Queen Mary Ship has such a rich history! I had the privilege of spending a few nights onboard.
I discovered this portrait of the real Queen Mary… and several other historic photos and artifacts.
My! How impressive the Ocean Liner looks docked in Long Beach, California.
A couple of times a day… the ship 🚢 sounds it’s mighty horn…
With a lot of the
elements of the ship still in place…
and other preserved items…
All around you…
You can just close your eyes… and imagine how things used to be… nostalgic music playing throughout the ship.. sets the tone.
On May 27, 1936, the Queen Mary departed from Southampton, England on her maiden voyage.
The Queen Mary… was built decades after the Titanic.
It -almost- doubles the Titanic in weight… and was a faster, more powerful ship. It also had the most advanced technologies and ideas.
The Queen Mary also happens to be about 140 feet longer than theTitanic.
The Ship had five dining areas and lounges, two cocktail bars and swimming pools, a grand ballroom, a music rehearsal room, a writing room, gym, nursery, fine stores, a squash court and even a small hospital.
The Queen Mary had set a new benchmark in transatlantic travel,
Oh, and one more important detail: During it’s period of service… The Queen Mary had 1,001 trans-Atlantic crossings… The Titanic unfortunately.. had none.In case you’re wondering… the “Titanic” movie was not filmed on the Queen Mary… but tons of other productions have taken place on this ship including:Scenes from the original Sabrina (1954 – starring Bogart and Hepburn)The Poseidon Adventure (1972) A movie with Frank Sinatra called “Assault On A Queen, The Godfather II, The Natural, and in the liner’s heyday, Fred Astaire cut a rug on the dance floor… An episode of TV series X-Files, The Parent Trap (1998) Batman Forever (1995) The Aviator (2004) Pearl Harbor (2001) The Young and the Restless, episodes of Arrested Development, Party Down, Baywatch, The interiors (The 1st Class Dining Room and Observation Bar) appear in “The Aviator” (Warner Bros. 2004), “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (Paramount 1999) Exterior shots in “Pearl Harbor” ( 2001), Parts of the pilot episode of the Love Boat was also filmed on the Queen Mary. An episode of “Quantum Leap” Out to Sea” with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, There’s even a Queen Mary reference in The Shawshank Redemption. At the end of the movie when Red goes and digs up the box that Andy left for him, the money is in a Queen Mary candy tin.The boat also had LOTS of famous passengers…Hollywood ⭐️ celebrities like Bob Hope and Clark Gable, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Greta Garbo, Lynne Redgrave, Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, royalty like the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and dignitaries like Winston Churchill. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Edward VII and Wallis Simpson, President Robert Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy

As World War II started, the Queen Mary’s transformation into a troopship had begun. She was painted a camouflaged grey color and stripped of her luxurious amenities. Dubbed the “Grey Ghost” because of her stealth and stark color, the Queen Mary was the largest and fastest troopship to sail, capable of transporting as many as 16,000 troops
Since her retirement from the sea as an active liner in 1967, the Queen Mary has never been more popular as an iconic Southern California attraction, hotel, and venue for special events.
The ship carried some 2.2 million passengers in peacetime and 810,000 military personnel in the Second World War, but here in Long Beach, an estimated 50 million people have visited.
The Queen Mary left South Hampton for the last time on October 31, 1967 and sailed to the port of Long Beach, California…where she is permanently moored.
Much of the machinery, including one of the two engine rooms, three of the four propellers, and all of the boilers, were removed.
The ship now serves as a tourist attraction featuring restaurants, a museum and a hotel.
The Queen Mary is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a popular place for weddings, luncheons, banquets, conventions, business meetings, parties, and many other social events.
Around Halloween 🎃 time…one of the scariest adventures takes place at the Queen Mary.
Monsters and Mazes draw thrill seekers from all across the globe.
The Queen Mary also has a reputation of being haunted…you know…
Ghost hunters, and mediums have plenty of stories… and close encounters to share…
Historic tours, and Haunted tours take place on the ship all year long..
The popular Halloween attraction is called:
